January Notes 2004

January 2004 can be classified as a very cold month. Our average temperatures was 18.0°.
Normal avaerage tmeperature is 25.8°.  This is about 7.8° below normal.

Was it cold?  Absolutely!  Was it record cold for January?  Absolutely not!

However, we did break a state record on January 10th for the lowest temperature ever recorded
in the state since records began in 1893 here, with a low temperature of -12° at High Point.
The entire county was below zero that day!

The all-time average record cold temperature was during January 1982 when the average
temperature was 12.1°.  This occurred at High Point State Park.

Putting everything in perspective, and since the majority of the population lives at lower elevations,
the next average coldest temperature for January was in 1970 in Sussex with an average of 14.2°
